Am   29. April   1967 wurde in New York das Musical "Hair" von Galt McDermont uraufgeführt, das die Werte der Flower-Power-Generation als Gegenentwurf zum Amerika des Vietnamkriegs feierte.

Es ist die Zeit des amerikanischen Engagements in Vietnam und auch der Proteste eines Teiles der amerikanischen Jugend gegen diesen als sinnlos erkannten Krieg. Bevor Claude zur Musterung geht, gönnt er sich zwei gute Tage in New York, der Junge vom Land ist von der Stadt fasziniert. Eine Gruppe von Hippies reißt ihn in den wilden und gegen die etablierte Gesellschaft protestierenden Strudel ihres Lebens. Berger und seine Gefährten schmuggeln sich mit Claude auf eine Party der feinen Gesellschaft, wo Berger das Establishment mit einem wilden Tanz über den Tisch, an dem die geladenen Gäste auf das Essen warten, provoziert. Die Hippies landen vorübergehend im Gefängnis und Claude wird im Militärcamp gedrillt, bis er die Nachricht bekommt, dass er bald nach Vietnam muss. Damit Claude seine Freundin vorher noch einmal treffen kann, schmuggelt sich Berger ins Camp und nimmt dort seine Stelle ein, nur für kurze Zeit, wie alle meinen. Doch dann wird die Truppe unerwartet plötzlich nach Vietnam geschickt und Berger fliegt an Claudes Stelle an die Front. Es endet für ihn tödlich. Milos Forman verfilmte den Stoff 1979 mit Treat Williams, Beverly D'Angelo und John Savage in den Hauptrollen.
